I’m growing totally tempted vivid Violet for the first time in My California zone 9B garden. They are absolutely stunning and this is a plant that I will definitely repeat. So far our summer has been pretty mild. It’s mid June and we’ve only hit triple digits once so I can’t say how they’ll do when we hit 105 which is typical for us. But so far in the 95° range, they’re doing absolutely terrific! They have filled in just beautifully they’ve gotten about as tall as they are wide with a really beautiful mounded shape. I followed the recommended spacing and they have formed a perfect dr1ft of this really rich violet color, which is so so pretty. They also bury their dead flowers, which is nice so no deadhead needed. I wish I could post a picture to show you just how pretty they are. But all I can say is definitely grow. These you will be so happy!

Maintenance Notes:Cuphea is a heat lover and that grows in both arid and humid climates. Always keep this plant in full sun for best flowering and to prevent it from stretching in the shade.
Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season. Regular feeding will keep it full and constantly flowering. Once established, it does not require a lot of water.
This plant is a perennial in USDA zones 9a and higher, but should be considered an annual in colder climates. If you are in a marginally hardy area, an application of light mulch (like pine needles) about 6 inches deep and a foot wide may help the plant survive the winter. When the threat of frost has passed, remove the layer of mulch. The plant should not be cut back in the winter. If it has dead plant material or is leggy in spring, you can trim it back once new growth begins.

This is the first year I found these at my local nursery. They have grown beautifully and the plants filled out well and have handled the early summer heat of 90's.. I am hoping they will come back next year - we are in 8B zone which Would like to know if I should have pinched them back when planting as they started out at about 8"" when they were planted and now are about 18" and are a little top heavy. I gave it 4 stars since I didn't have information about pinching them back to keep them in a more mounded form. I have had good luck with Cuphea Hybrid (Cigar Plant) returning each year.
