Pink Chiffon^® Rose of Sharon Hibiscus syriacus

I planted a 3 gallon size pink chiffon in spring of 2023. Planted it in a location that wasn’t on irrigation or convenient to drag a hose to so it didn’t get much supplemental water after the first couple weeks. That year here in zone 8b Mississippi, we had a very hot dry summer with no rain for nearly 6 weeks. I lost several hydrangeas, arborvitae, and other shrubs that summer due to the extreme heat and drought but this rose of Sharron surprisingly held up and still gave me a few blooms. Last year it put on some vertical growth and gave a slightly better show of blooms. It’s now late spring of 2025 and this plant is absolutely stunning. 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide and covered in gorgeous soft pink frilly blooms. As for other reviews about it self seeding, I have found 3-4 seedlings each spring but they were no problem to pull out. After seeing what a display this plant puts on, I wouldn’t be mad at a few seedlings here and there.

These plants are fantastic.! I planted three last fall. When Spring came this year they leafed out and started blooming shortly after. I loved the blooms so much that I purchased four more. Likewise they are blooming beautifully and I am very happy with them. They will make a beautiful screen between our neighbors pool and us. We are far enough away that the bloom shedding shouldn’t be a problem for our neighbors. Can’t sing their praises enough. So far I haven’t had a problem with self seeding, but worth pulling out a few sprouts if it should.

I purchased these plants from the Home Depot website on March 21, 2021, they were shipped directly from Proven Winners. These two plants quart size were about six inches high when I received them and I waited until around Memorial Day 2021, to plant them in the ground. They are now about 12 to 15 inches high, one sprig each, no buds, or flowers. They are in a sun to partial shade space in my yard, and have been fertilized last summer and again after Memorial Day this year. I protected them with spikes, mesh deer fence and fall leaves over the winter. Still protected with deer fence. Reading these other reviews makes me think that I received two duds, and am very disappointed. 2 Stars because they are still alive. A Facebook reply stated that it may take 4-6 years to maturity. No where in the online description does it state this. I would have done more hydrangeas, mine are spectacular. And grow from the dead wood and center to about 5 feet high and 5 feet in diameter every year.

I bought 2 of this and based my decision on it being not a prolific seeder. I love the blooms so much and recommended it a lot last year. Imagine my surprise today when I saw about a dozen seedlings under each shrub today. I now debate if I should move them. Beautiful shrub but I hope they don’t seed aggressively.

The best pink Hibiscus variety - clear pink semi-double. The blooms hold their colour well and don't fade as fast as others do. Love it!
